Art: Color Paintings

The girls were presented with this challenge: Paint a painting where the subject of the painting is COLOR.  This seemed easy enough at first, after all there are so many colors to choose from!

Most of them used every color available.  Some used what they knew about complementary colors (opposites: red/green, orange/blue, purple/yellow) to make dramatic effects.  Others relied on pattern or shape.  After multiple painting sessions, they were introduced to neutrals.  Neutrals are colors that have some of each primary (yellow, blue, red) in the mix.  Neutrals help all the colors get along.  They are like good hosts at a party; because they have a little of every color they make every color feel welcome.  See the variety of neutrals in the picture below.

Happenings in 2nd Grade

We had our second pioneer craft session Wednesday during social studies.  The girls were happily working on their crafts which include doll making, cross stitch, quilting, sewing aprons, and knitting.  Our wonderful parent volunteers were having as much fun as the girls!  We will complete our work next week and look forward to the pioneer picnic when all of the crafts will be displayed.  Here are some pictures of the girls in action.

This morning the girls enjoyed watching former Bryn Mawr student, Anna Menendez, a professional dancer who treated us with her Spanish dancing.  Some of the girls volunteered to practice various dance moves on stage.  It was great to welcome a former Bryn Mawr student back to campus!

French: Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans ta chambre?

In French class, the girls have been learning how to describe places. For example, "Il y a des jouets dans ma chambre" means "There are toys in my bedroom." They put their knowledge to use when I asked them to create short videos using the iPad app, Puppet Pals HD. This is a fabulous app that allows the girls to record their voices and use different characters and backgrounds in order to create skits. This week, their characters greeted each other, described their bedrooms, and said goodbye. The girls had a great time changing their voices to fit the characters. The videos were funny, creative, and French-filled--we will definitely be using Puppet Pals HD again!

Happenings in Second Grade

The second grade girls had an exciting day today! First, our Friday assembly was an informative session about the Walters Art Museum.  The girls saw some beautiful pieces of jewelry and learned about the many fun activities the Walters has to offer. Admission to the Walters is FREE!  This was a great assembly and got the girls very excited about art.

Later in the day, the girls hopped on a bus to the Meyerhoff to listen to a wonderful performance by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The BSO performed The Carnival of Animals, which the girls enjoyed!  It was neat to be at the Meyerhoff and hear such beautiful music.  Here are some pictures of the girls on the trip!

The second graders are learning about the Value of Perseverance. Together, we defined this Value as "Sticking To It, " and I used scotch tape to emphasize the stickiness! Each girl spoke about ways they Persevere everyday at school and at home. Some of their remarks were: "I work hard in learning my Math facts," I am sticking to it with my reading," 'I am sticking to it in learning the Monkey Bars," " I am working hard on keeping my room clean," "I am working hard to be a good friend." Talk with your daughters about times you persevered.
