Science and Math Fun with 4th Grade

The second grade girls had a treat this week...but it wasn't the kind that you eat.  They were visited by the fourth grade girls who had made original electronic math games in their science class.  One or two second graders worked with each fourth grader to play the games, which required them to do addition or subtraction problems. When a circuit containing a light bulb was used to connect the problem with the correct answer, the bulb lit up.  The fourth graders demonstrated their knowledge of electric circuits and the second graders showed that they knew their math facts.  The rooms were bright with shining bulbs and smiling faces!

Holiday Concert

The second grade girls did a wonderful job at the Holiday Concert this morning. Everyone looked very festive in their colorful turtlenecks and enjoyed singing a variety of songs. Each homeroom took a minute to take a group picture before the performance.

The girls enjoyed seeing their parents and guests after the performance and everyone had fun together at our Winter Party.

French: Qu'est-ce que tu bois?

In French class, they girls are learning about drinks and how to order them. They identify images and say whether or not they drink the item pictured. After using the image cards for a bit of time, they were very excited when one day they pulled the actual drinks from a shopping bag. In the picture below, you see two students in "Café Bryn Mawr." One is the waitress and one is the customer. The girls love using their imagination to order and serve drinks to each other in French.

French: Je bois un Orangina!

Yesterday, we began our final Orangina skit performances. The girls greet each other, ask and answer questions, and order drinks in a café. They have done an excellent job of memorizing their lines and, as you can see in the picture below, we have already had some very fun and dramatic performances. As a treat, we had an Orangina tasting party after the skits.

Science: Our Honeybee Hive

The girls finished their study of insects by creating their own bee hive.  They made each cell, made models of bees in each stage of the life cycle, and created their own adult worker bees.  It was fun to put the hive together, complete with honey (represented by yellow tissue paper) and pollen (represented by orange tissue paper.)  The girls worked together to create this project, just as the workers of the hive cooperate to help their community.

Upper School activity

On Tuesday, the Lower School girls had a chance to do a fun activity with girls from the Upper School. The second grade girls worked with 10th graders to build a bird house out of a recycled water bottle. The girls learned a lot of facts about birds and got the chance to meet and work with a new Upper School friend. They were given a kit to make the bird houses at home as well as bird seed to fill the bottle.  Hopefully some families have started to make this neat project! When you see a bird eating from the feeder make sure to take a picture and send it into school.  Here are some pictures of the girls in action!

Have you seen some of these birds on your feeder?

Thank you, Upper School girls for a great lesson!

Art: Blending Oil Pastels

The girls watched an online video to learn blending techniques with oil pastels. They practiced stippling, cross-hatching, overlapping, and dragging on an art card. Then they used these techniques on their dramatic landscapes.
